Protocols in Homeopathic Prescribing

This is a word that is used a lot in today’s world. And it is a word we all understand and accept. Having protocols in homeopathy isn’t a great idea. Because protocols can forget about the individuality of the individual. But sometimes, the word ‘protocol’ when used by a homeopath simply means – taking the symptoms and characteristic traits of an individual …. and matching that with a really good remedy. This is the best protocol. This is basically just following the fundamental principles of homeopathy.

But sometimes when we hear these two words in the same sentence – homeopathy and protocol – we need to ask ourselves

  • If you’re a homeopath, are you using the same protocol of remedies for every client with the same ‘dis-ease’ label? This isn’t a great idea. You MUST take the individuality of the client into account. Patterns of symptoms within dis-ease names will be seen, but the person inside the individual is paramount.
  • Do you believe that detox should always be prescribed? Again, not very individual. Detox should only ever be considered if there is evidence. And that evidence will not always be seen at the first consultation – there might be a glimpse of it, but nothing concrete. Because the first consultation typically highlights the need for one or two main remedies based on the individual’s presenting symptoms (and other traits that typically highlight a remedy selection). Minimum dose after all. Detox remedies (tautopathy) are given when there is evidence of something constraining the homeopathic response. Homeopathy doesn’t always need this. If you don’t believe this, then do some deep thinking. Homeopathy works after all.
  • Do you believe that only low potencies should be given? Or do you believe that only LMs should be given? If you buy into this, that is ok. But make sure this doesn’t impact on your remedy receiver who may require something outside of your ‘norm’. It is imperative to be ‘homeopathic’ to the remedy receiver.
  • Are you looking for something specific from homeopathy? Or are you looking for something that you saw on social media promoted by a good marketer? You need to communicate and discuss this with your practitioner. Remedies are energetic blueprints of various substances and are matched with the individual client – so there is no way a practitioner can tell a remedy to limit itself to only one part. For example, you might have candida and you just want your skin symptoms sorted. Homeopathy is holistic so must take everything into account. So the remedy won’t just focus on your skin – it focuses on your whole being as an individual. This is the holistic element of homeopathy – the individual, not the symptom.
  • Do you believe that because a certain remedy worked for somebody you know, or have treated, that it should be prescribed to somebody else just because they have similar symptoms? If you’ve read on social media that X remedy worked for eczema in a young child, does that mean that that same remedy should be prescribed to another child? Or have you the homeopath read in a homeopaths group that X remedy worked in another homeopath’s case and therefore should be prescribed to yours? No it just doesn’t work that way. The individuality of the client must be taken into account.
    • For example, we could have 3 family members who have hayfever living in the same house, with the same garden and outside environment. Do they all get the same remedy? Probably not! They all get the remedy that matches their own individuality, which does not have to be the same.
  • Do we continually question our thinking on homeopathy, and everything else? What if our thinking and beliefs are limiting us in some way? It is good to ask ourselves …. am I right on this? What if there’s a different way?
  • Have you been prescribed remedies by somebody who is not a homeopath? Be very careful if this is the case. Using remedies ‘acutely’ is very very different to using them professionally for chronic, ongoing, recurring issues. Understanding the levels and layers of health, and how homeopathy can be used should be deeply understood.
